MARIAN-KATHRYN CRANFORD ("MK") is a native of Chapel Hill, NC and danced at Carolina Dance Center while in high school. She was an inaugural member of the CDC performance companies and enjoyed performing roles such as The Sugarplum Fairy, Wendy in Peter Pan, The Genie in Aladdin, and Belle in Beauty and the Beast. MK graduated Cum Laude in 2011 from Meredith College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies with a concentration in Private Studio Teaching. At Meredith, Miss MK performed and choreographed for both the Meredith Dance Theatre and the Meredith Jazz and Tap Company and was also the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Dance Department award for Academic Excellence. She studied abroad for the duration of her junior year at the Laban Dance Conservatory in London, England, and was honored to have her work selected for presentation at the end-of-year show at Laban. While in London, MK had the opportunity to train and work with noted artists and teachers such as Julia K. Gleich, Sonia Rafferty, Melanie Clarke and Rosemary Brandt, among others. In the fall of 2012, MK relocated to Philadelphia to pursue a Master of Education degree in Dance at Temple University, where her thesis research focused on the area of early childhood dance education. While at Temple, she was given the opportunity to work with numerous dance scholars such as Dr. Karen Bond, Dr. Theresa Purcell-Cone, Dr. Teresa Benzwie, Dr. Monica Frichtel, Merian Soto, and Dr. Joy Friedlander, among others. She was also honored to be the 2014 recipient of the Teresa Benzwie Dance in Education Award. Miss MK is also an active member of the National Dance Education Organization.
Miss MK has been teaching dance for the past eight years to students ages eighteen months to adults in the areas of creative movement, ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, lyrical, modern, and hip hop. She has worked with both recreational and pre-professional students at several studios throughout NC, PA, and NJ and also enjoys choreographing for performance companies and competition teams. MK is dedicated to providing her students a well-rounded dance education. Her classes combine creativity, imagination, and fun to inspire a love and life-long appreciation of the arts in her dancers. She is a vibrant and caring teacher who is passionate about bringing the joy of dance to her students. Miss MK is thrilled to be back at CDC and looks forward to another great year of dance!
